Through The Times series picture book the author keeps track of the comings and going of automobiles and petrol prices as well as disasters in the air, on the rail and the road. Mr Harrison's research brings out facts and trivia that would delight any transport enthusiast. This though is the weakness. The hefty picture book: is not a travel book, it is a chronological snapshot of transport. The images range from seminal shots: Wright brothers flight, the Titanic and the explosion of the spaceship Challenger to more intimate images of people and, mostly, their cars. It is unknown who actually snapped these images, though the picture book makes efforts at copyright acknowledgements. For the train spotter--or in this case--the transport spotter--this is a must-have book. And for the rail commuter ("the first commuters in Britain traveled the Liverpool & Manchester Railway", 1842) or those caught in the nightmare that is the M1 (the country's first motorway, 1959) and frustrated with going nowhere ("hundreds of years ago it could take an hour to cross London Bridge") the book gives some relief to know that whatever the means of transport--grand or gridlocked--you are not alone. --Kathleen Buckley

The Titanic disaster has been the inspiration for a huge amount of writing, not to mention a film or two, and this volume is an unusually intelligent culling of writing and images from the event and the eight decades following its sinking. It is a superb anthology, a model of how this sort of thing ought to be done; 100s of fascinating and revealing documents and pictures. Some of the writing is familiar, but much of it has been collected here for the first time. Titanic, as a subject, is particularly well chosen, because it is able to give both tight focus (on the ship) and wide range (over the whole century).The earlier selections are from pre- publicity for the ship ("Accommodation of Unrivalled Magnificence" as was boasted) and from the ship itself, letters from passengers and so on. The central sections retell the story of the iceberg and the sinking and its extracts still have power to set the little hairs standing on your skin: from the understated wireless messages Foster prints ("CQD [Come Quick Danger] Have struck an iceberg. We are badly damaged. Titanic") to personal reminiscence and the proceedings of subsequent official enquiries. Finally we are given a wide range of later reactions to the tragedy, from Hardy's superb poem "The Convergence of the Twain" through to contemporary writers like Geoffrey Hill and Julian Barnes. The sinking of the Titanic has fascinated people for over a century, largely because it involves a series of quite small errors that lead up to a big disaster. One of the most debated issues is that of the SS Californian and the role she and her captain, Stanley Lord, did – or didn’t – play in events.

This book sets out to rehabilitate Lord’s reputation as a scapegoat for not coming to the rescue sooner. It does a good job of showing that the relative positions of the ships mean that the Titanic and the Californian couldn’t have been within sight of each other when the disaster occurred. It also offers strong evidence that, because of her position and that of the ice field, even if the Californian had responded to the first CQD messages it’s unlikely that she could have reached the site of the wreck any sooner than the Carpathia.

What it doesn’t satisfactorily address is why having had reports of rockets being fired, an internationally recognised distress signal, Lord didn’t simply wake his wireless operator and get him to find out what was happening.

Nonetheless the book is well worth reading for the detailed analysis it provides of the events of that fateful night and the subsequent US and UK inquiries.

Written by a marine expert, the book destroys the myth that Californian was in sight of Titanic when she sank. It also exposes the rotten antics of the English establishment - particularly the judicial establishment - of the time. However, in my opinion it does not entirely vindicate Captain Lord. Californian's officers observed 8 rockets being fired from over the horizon - from 19.5 miles away - by Titanic. The vessel seen close (5 miles) to Californian could not have fired them - although from Californian they seemed in line with that vessel - because their zenith was below her masthead and because they were not heard to detonate. Rockets from 19.5 miles away obviously appear to have a low zenith because of the curvature of the earth. Furthermore, the sound would arrive at the observer more than a minute after the light and would be greatly attenuated. It should have been apparent to any trained sea officer that they might be a distress signal. Californian's officers should have called the radio operator to listen for a distress message. Captain Lord must take vicarious responsibility for their shortcomings. It is irrelevant whether Californian may have been too far away to assist before Titanic sank: the simple fact is that she failed to respond to a distress call. In Captain Lord's defence it may be said that merchant marine at the time had a lackadaisical attitude to safety at sea - eg the Titanic captain's reliance on past luck to drive full tilt into an icefield which the Board of Enquiry regarded as bad practice but not cause for condemnation because everyone did it! No doubt many sea officers of the time would have acted in the same way as Lord's crew, but Lord was unlucky in being in the wrong place at the wrong time when officialdom was seeking a scapegoat. A very enjoyable and instructive read even though I don't agree absolutely with the author's conclusion.

Dr Michael Martin was born in Dublin in 1958 and went to live in Cork where he joined the Irish Navy and served for 23 years. In the latter part of his career he became an advocate of the right of association for serving military personnel in Ireland and successfully took a constitutional case against the State. As a result legislation in Ireland was created to provide for statutory representative bodies for serving personnel and Michael was the first ever elected General Secretary of PDFORRA (Permanent Defence Force Other Ranks Representative Association). On retirement Michael undertook a degree in history in University College Cork, graduating with First Class Honours he was then awarded the title of Scholar by the Academic Council and Governing body of UCC. He subsequently pursued a PhD and was conferred with his Doctorate having conducted research as a visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley. The subject of his thesis entitled 'Breaking Ranks' examines the emergence of representative bodies in the Irish Armed Forces. This is due to be published in book form in 2015.
In 1998 Michael created the Titanic Trail in Cobh Ireland. This became one of Ireland most highly regarded guided walking tours exploring the history of Cobh and its connections with Titanic. His booklet on which he based the tour has sold thousands of copies over the years and the tour still operates daily in Cobh. His book about Spike Island helped save the island from destruction and it has since been regarded as a national heritage treasure. Michael created a guided tour for Spike island which still operates today. During his time in the Navy, Michael served at sea and ashore and undertook a tour of duty with the United Nations Interim Force in South Lebanon. His latest book, 'RMS Lusitania, it wasn't and it didn't', explores the narrative that grew up around the Lusitania that it was an innocent ship which brought America into the war. On 10 April 1912, 2 first, 1 second and 28 third-class Norwegian passengers boarded the Titanic. Only 10 of them were to survive the sinking five days later. This book is about those 31 individuals. In many ways, the various elements of their story belong just as much to the other non-English speaking passengers who were on board.

‘Titanic – 31 Norwegian Destinies’ starts off with a look into the vast emigration from Norway to America and a detailed account of each passenger’s background, and finishes off with what happened to the survivors and the many bereaved Norwegian families.

It covers a vast array of the stranger tales surrounding the sinking of the ill fated passenger liner RMS Titanic on that cold night in April 1912. Many of these stories would have fallen into obscurity if not carefully collected and published together by the author. The book progresses from the least to the most believable tales of psychic phenomenon. One chapter deals entirely with the noted spiritualist and Pall Mall Gazette editor, W. T. Stead who would eventually lose his life on the Titanic. What purpose does this book serve? The field of Titanic books for children is crowded with excellent work, huge color diagrams, wonderful paintings, color photographs of artifacts, maps, survivor interviews, etc.

This book does not offer those things. It somehow managed to make the Titanic sinking uneventful.

An Irish government report was published two years after the disaster. It speculated on possible causes for the crash but produced no definitive conclusions. A blizzard of rumour surrounded the incident for many years, of which the most popular was that the plane had been blown out of the sky during a British military training exercise and that the whole thing had subsequently been hushed up to spare the blushes of the London government. More than thirty years after the crash, the Irish government delegated a new study to three independent experts, two French and one Australian. Mike Reynolds was their Irish-based assistant, gathering information, interviewing surviving witnesses and performing other relevant tasks. His insistence on the recent evolution of separate breeds, even those generally considered to have originated centuries ago like the Mexican hairless, is sure to be controversial. His interpretation of recent behavioural research may raise some hackles as well and begins with an examination of pack behaviour in wolves. While wild packs have only one dominant male and female, we often expect our dogs to behave submissively to an extended family of dominants--not only can that be difficult, but some of their natural "submissive" behaviour can be extremely frustrating. Face licking is an easy example of this poor conduct; Rover thinks he's showing submission, but Grandma's not thrilled with having an 80-pound shepherd jumping on her. In discussions of more general behaviours, Budiansky's examinations of the motivation levels present in different breeds seems to explain much about the success or failure of obedience training. While you may raise your eyebrows and frown through a few of his assertions, this fresh look at old assumptions makes a fascinating read for anyone who's ever loved a dog. --Jill Lightner

Descriptions of the some of the victims fates are included in the account as well as other interesting anomalies that were observed on that evening. Not for persons under the age of 17 years old. The witness account has undergone United States Government censorship, but the author documents where in the account that censorships took place.
